Regarding this example, I don’t understand why the hover effect shifts the tag content to the right (in FF at least)?

The transition rules don’t include the un-prefixed version, so this will no longer work in newer browsers (e.g. Firefox 22 which has a flag to disable -moz- prefix support for transition)
